Information about Zoe

Hey there! I`m Zoe. I`ll be starting my third year of an honours BA in Psychology at the University of Regina, with a focus on educational and cognitive psychology.

So here`s where I make my case. I believe these four things are essential to a student performing as well as they can:

1. Close and collaborative student-teacher relationships
2. An emphasis on fun in learning __ making coursework entertaining and relevant to students.
3. Consideration of the way in which the student learns the best, and a focus on comprehension and real-world applications over memorization.
4. Frequent, small-scale practice tests __ psychological research consistently shows that testing improves student performance, even if they do poorly, and that students retain information better when they learn it gradually, rather than all at once.

Public schools seem to emphasize a method of learning that involves memorizing huge amounts of information, regurgitating that word-for-word on a test, and then immediately forgetting it. At the very least, few are doing an adequate job of showing students other ways to study and learn. I hope to be able to show struggling students that there is a different and better way; and teach in a way that considers the newest and most important findings in educational research and psychology __ findings which often take years to be applied in schools, if they ever are.

Willing to travel: 30 miles

Experience: Nobody has ever paid me to be a tutor, but I have years and years of experience being the go-to for my friends and classmates in editing essays, helping with interpretation of prose and poetry in English, explaining difficult math problems or concepts that they didn`t understand, even helping teachers with marking.

And I have a very good academic record! I received a $1500 scholarship entering university for having an average of over 93% in high school, I completed the IB certificate program in higher level English, Biology, and higher level Chemistry, and I have a 3.0 GPA. So at the very least, my methods have worked for me, and I very much hope for the opportunity to help others in the same way.
